The 2-Days Wildlife Safari offers an incredible Big5 wilderness experience as you explores Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only savanna park. Akagera NP is a true African wilderness gem, stocked with incredible diversity of game and birdlife across its plethora of habitats including savanna grasslands, mountain ridges and extensive wetlands pocked by fresh water lakes. This guided tour will be led by our our naturalist tour guide who will take you on interpretive game drives experience to encounter a variety of game including Lions, Black and Southern White Rhinos, Cape buffalo, Elephant, Common Eland, Water Buck, Zebra, colorful Topi, Giraffes, Impala, Bushbuck and more.
The late evening and morning game drives will broaden chances to encounter the Lion prides and Hyena clans even the elusive Leopard hunt that stalk the woodlands. Smaller carnivores including jackals, and several mongoose parties are often encountered across grasslands.
You will continue with the wildlife experience while on a boat cruise safari on Lake Ihema, the largest of the lakes in the park, to come into close quarters of Hippos and the Nile Crocodile. The birdlife across the park’s mosaic of habitats is excellent with up to 500 species checklist.
Detailed Itinerary for 2 Days Akagera Wildlife Safari
Day One: Transfer to Akagera National Park, and have an evening Boat Cruise
Early this morning, your driver guide will pick you from your hotel/residence to transfer you to Akagera National Park. The two- and half-hour drive from Kigali City is smooth with short scenic and stretch stops. Checking in at the park you will head out for a hot lunch at your lodge. This accommodation is perfectly considered for its excellent location on the shores of L. Ihema and its wilderness feel.
Boat Cruise Highlight
Late afternoon you will embark on a boat cruise for chances to encounter up-close the semi-aquatic hippo pods resident on these waters but also the Nile Crocodile, Nile monitor and other wildlife coming over to drink. Hippos are typical grazers living in social family pods headed by a dominant bull that defends and owns all the mating rights. The hippos’ notorious behavior of displays include snorting and intimidating yawns revealing its over twelve-inch canines.
Sunsets on L. Ihema is incredible over the western rolling hillsides.
Late Evening Drive
From the boat cruise, you will head to a guided evening drive targeting the nocturnal wildlife including; Nightjars, Lions and hyenas. Spending most of the day resting in dens and shades these iconic species prefer heading out to hunt, socialize and defend their territories in the cool of the night and mornings. Day Two: Morning Drive and transfer to Kigali
After an early breakfast, we will meet up a ranger guide from reception and head out for wilderness drive. Our main targets will include Lions, Leopard and Hyena often encountered in the cool of the morning but Elephants, Buffalos, rhino, giraffes, eland, zebra, topi and many other herbivores will be on the list as we cover various habitats.
On these game drives, we not only focus on mammals and birds but also take time to absorb the beauty of these expansive landscapes characterized by rolling hills, expansive marshes, plains, and the emptiness of wilderness.
From the game drive head out for lunch and transfer to Kigali or your preferred drop point.
